Default Windows Vista icons for IrfanView images

February 16, 2008 | 10:34 pm | Tags: software

IrfanView is an awesome image viewer. I’ve been using it for almost 9 years now. Though, just like every piece of software, it’s not perfect. Every time I set IrfanView as a default viewer for certain image types in Windows Vista (Options > Properties/Settings > Extensions), no matter whether the “Use different icons (Icons-PlugIn)” check box is checked or not, the same ugly red program icons are displayed for all IrfanView Images. It’s pretty bad when you can’t tell apart different image file formats by looking at their icons. So I was wondering if there was a way to reset the default Vista icons (they’re pretty nice actually) and keep the images associated with IrfanView. I made this little registry modification that fixes these icons for BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF files.

If you want to use these icons with IrfanView, just download the following file, unpack it to C:\Program Files\IrfanView, and double click IrfanView_VistaDefaultIcons.reg file (requires administrator rights). If your IrfanView is located in a different directory, simply edit the .reg file to match the program location on your computer. I have also extracted the icons from system DLLs to separate ICO files so that you could use them easily for more image formats. Enjoy!

This also works on Windows 7!!! (just tested it on an x64 W7 Ultimate)

All you have to do is edit the programm location in the .reg-file (i.e. @=”C:\\Program Files (x86)\\IrfanView\\IconsVista\\gif.ico”)

The paths might be different for the x86 version.

This solution is by far the most convenient I could find on the web. And it beats the hell out of having to rummage around in the registry yourself.

    Thanks!!!

Hallo. the reason why you have the problem of the icons reseting is that irfanview uses icons in icons.dll (the ugly red cat with the file extension written on top) whenever you choose (use different icons for file extensions.) the solution would be to insert theese icons into icons.dll and i could do that but i need the permission of the author of the icons. Are you him? and if you are, can i modify some of them or combine them with other graphics I make or I find on the internet in order to create an icon database for each extension irfanview opens?

OMG thank you for this! I, too, have been using Irfanview for pretty much as long as I’ve had a computer, and the icons have always been my biggest beef with the otherwise flawlessly designed program. In XP, it’s easy enough to change the icons back, but I was tearing my hair out trying to get it to work in Vista. This makes my day!
